Who can get help from the NDIS?

Only certain people are eligible for the NDIS.  To get the NDIS you must:

  • Have a permanent disability
  • Be less than 65 years old when the NDIS comes to your area
  • Live in Australia
  • Be an Australian Citizen or have a special piece of paper saying you can live in Australia.  These are called the access requirements.

To be eligible your disability needs to be one that will be lifelong and your connection with NDIS will support you for your whole life.  Your disability might be a:

  • Sensory disability like being deaf or blind
  • Physical disability
  • Intellectual disability
  • Psychosocial disability from a mental health issue

People with these types of disability may require help with:

  • getting dressed
  • getting around
  • understanding things
  • making friends
  • getting a job

The NDIS will also help children aged 0-6 with help when they are young to make their life better for when they are older.  This is called Early Childhood Intervention ECEI.
