What does the NDIS cover?
The NDIS provides reasonable and necessary supports for people living with a permanant or significant disability to help them to live a full life. Each NDIS participant will have their own plan reflecting their goals, personal circumstances and disability support needs. While the focus of the plan is the person with disability, the types of supports in the participant’s plan may also have direct or indirect benefits for families and carers.
The NDIS can cover many types of support and these things will be individual for each person.
Example things the NDIS may cover include:
- Assistance with daily living, personal care or help at home – including help to improve a participant’s ability to do things for themselves in their home or the community
- Social and community supports – to enable a participant to enjoy social and community interaction without relying solely on family members
- Transport to be active in the community, economic and daily life activities
- Employment services – guidance for participants to gain employment, undertake employment programs or help to keep employment
- Therapeutic supports such as behaviour support
- Aids or equipment assessment
- Some home modifications which may include the design, installation and training of mobility equipment
- Some car modifications
- Training for family members to provide care that is reasonable in relation to the participant’s age and family circumstances
The NDIS does not cover all things that people may need in life. For example, it will not fund general living expenses such as rent or food and it will not cover anything which should be covered by another sector, such as the health or education system.
In order to work out what you can and can’t be funded for, you will need to undergo an individual assessment of your needs.
